Council Tax Reductions For People Who Are Disabled
If you are disabled or a disabled person lives with you, the Council Tax payer may be able to claim a disability reduction in their Council Tax.

The property must be the sole or main residence of the disabled person, and must provide one or more of the following as essential or of major importance to the well-being of the disabled person:

  1. a room other than the main bathroom, kitchen or lavatory which is used predominantly by the disabled person
  2. a second bathroom or kitchen which meets the needs of the disabled person
  3. sufficient floor space for a disabled person who has to use a wheelchair around the home

We will need to visit you to confirm that your home meets the requirements before we can grant the discount.

If a reduction is granted, the Council Tax due for the property is charged at the next lowest band, for example if the property had been placed in Band D when it was valued, the charge would be based on a Band C property.

Unitl 1st April 2000 you could not apply for a disability reduction if your property was in band A.  Since then, anyone living in a property that is placed in Band A will pay 5/9ths of the band D charge rather than 6/9ths. If you have been turned down for this reason before, you can reapply now.

It is possible that you may qualify for disablement relief and a discount, for example if you are disabled and you live on your own.  Please see our Council Tax Discounts page for details of other discounts you may be entitled to.
